The constant evolution of sculpture has brought us to Tara Donovan. She builds incredible sculptures, landscapes, and environments allowing us to see the world differently through common, everyday objects. Ms. Donovan is a current MacArthur Foundation “genius” award winner and her first major retrospective will open on October 10 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
While sculpture has a sense of form, there are new technologies that play with the idea of three-dimensionality and give two dimensional subjects a three-dimensional look. Microsoft Live Labs has created “Photosynth”. Photosynth processes the user’s photographs of an object or place from many different angles and then creates a sort of wrap around three sixty view of the object, room, or place. While this type of technology has been around for many years, (panoramic photography and stitch digital photography) photosynth takes it to a new level and allows users with inexpensive digital cameras to create photo montages with unlimited numbers of different views. Check out the classroom synth. In the creative hand, this tool can create the next wave of virtual sculpture.

I think that the art created by Tara Donavan is amazing because its unique, fresh and contemporary. I appreciate and enjoy the mystery her creations brings to us, the questions of "What is that?!" or "What is it made of?" were always popping up in my head as I looked at ther artwork. The suprise that the answers of those questions give us, is even more increadible. One could never imagine what people can create with simple-everyday-objects.
Tara Donavan is so creative! it is really hard to start from scratch and make a big sculpture out of everyday things my favorites are the styrofoam cups and the colony of pencils, i also have some more like the scotch tape one. at first when i saw the pictures i did not know what it was and for me the sculptures are speacial because she does it with things that you have at home or that you find really easy. that reates a style and now when I see some thing similar ill ask my self is that Tara Donavan?
I agree with Diana since those questions pop up while seeing her art pieces. It is also so surprising when you find out what the piece is made of, since they are materials very rare on an art piece, like paper plates and pencils, that as diana said I would never had imagine that art could be created with simple materials. The first thing that comes to my head is all the patience she has to have in order to assemble them in order and so neatly. Her art work has lots of uniqueness and I think that is what makes people watch her art.
It's amazing how Tara Donovan creates all this incredable sculptures out of anything. Before seeing her creation i thought that a sculture had to be realistic, but know seeing her work i can understand that you have to be creative and use your imagination to create something out of anything! To me doing sculture is really interesting and i love doing things like this and i thing i am more a sculpture girl than painting.I think that people when seeing all her art may say that is really surprising how she uses such daily matirial to creat something big and unique.
Tara Donavan's artwork is astounding. My favorite piece is the Styrofoam Cups in the ceiling. It's well proportioned and the up and down curves gives it movement. I get the feeling it is water. Her inventiveness is soothing. All of her Artwork is organized. I would of never thought that wonderful art could be done with such simple items. I don't feel a message being transmitted but I get more ideas for my next artwork.
Wow, Tara Donavans art is really impressive. She just puts a spin on what I think of when I think "sculpture". Working with so many different materials she is somehow creating small new "worlds".
Also, the Photosynth was quite impressive, when I saw it at school, but it's nice to see how Microsoft locks Mac users out with a "We're sorry, but Photosynth currently doesn't run on your operating system. Please see our system requirements listed to the right." :]
I love the idea of photosynth! I am willing to try it someday, I am even downloading it to see if I can use it here in my computer.
Tara Donovan is amazing! I really enjoy looking at her work and admiring it. I think I could stay all day long looking at her sculptures. They are very unique and has her own personal style included in it which is very noticeable.
her sculpture reminds me of the sea and of objects related with the ocean. It brings me peacefulness and a sense of relaxation.
WOW! If Tara Donovan can not get a 10 on originality, please show me who can! I enjoyed looking of some of her work, especially on the patter and texture created by the repetition of the objects. I really feel though, than rather them being sculptures they are environments. I do dislike though, the fact that they are so spread out and looking like a virus or a spill on the floor.
The most impressive one was the one with the cups, because it looks like a bee hive, and has such a motion and smoothness that it has a very welcoming sense.
I have to agree with the other comments about how great Tara Donavan is. Initially, I was not too interested, because I could not see any figurative shapes. As my eyes scanned over the page, I noticed the materials used and that is when I was captivated by the pieces. It reminds me very much of Phoebe Washburn, artist who also uses everyday materials (in her case scrap materials from offices and construction sites to build pieces which have the span of entire rooms. See here:http://whitney.org/www/2008biennial/www/?section=artists&page=artist_washburn
I think that the great aspect of their works is that they find a way to enamour us with daily objects. I think these types of artists inspire others, encouraging to look at things we see everyday in a different light.
About photosynth, it seems like a very interesting idea. I personally however, have never had much skill using technology to create art. What is more, I tend to dismiss it. To me, the joy of creating a painting comes from holding the brush in my hand and sweeping paint across the canvas.
I like some aspects of Tara Donovan's art. She is very original and ALL her pieces appeal to our senses. I think her pieces are made with materials that are not common and that makes it more interesting for all viewers because you begin to question the process of how she created her art and what her inspiration was. I agree with Gabriela that her works are very relaxing due to the colors and the shapes she uses. She uses lines that are very free (if I can them like that) which gives me the feeling a flowing motion. She has a modern aspect in her all her artwork. It is not the type of art i would buy because it looks more like decoration which is what i dislike about it.
What i like the most about Tara Donovan's art works is that i do not get tiered of watching it i am always looking for something that gets my attention. I do not like that most of her works are in black and white because i feel something is missing. I also like the ones you can only see parts of the objects because i will try to understand it and see what it is. Mainly she paints very unusual shapes or objects but i like it because it maybe that's what calls my attention.
Tara Donovan is an incredible sculpturist. I truly admire her style, where she creates her sculptures in a certain shape, form and backround, giving out a mysterious feeling throughout an atmosphere of harmony and peace. I also like the fact that her artwork is abstract, where as she makes me question what she is trying to portray and emit thoughout her sculptures. Her sculptures actually captivate and intrigue me because of the peculiar characteristics and details that she has. At the same time, I try to interpret what they really mean and in effect get interested even more on its actual theme as a whole. Her creativity is simple but really complex, because it actually takes someone with a powerful imagination to create something so structured and meaningful, that at the same time makes the viewers worldwide explore different perspectives and points of view towards he intentions.

I have always liked the idea of simplicity in art conveying complex messages; I think Donovan´s art depicts this concept perfectly. Her art looks so personal and makes me feel peaceful. I think she has a great use of form, texture, space, and color to create such intimate atmospheres. I like the innovative materials, such as drinking straws she uses.
