The idea of simplicity in design is evident when we look at the TED talk by Rob Forbes on ways of seeing Video on TED.com Mr. Forbes has a unique way of seeing the extrodinary in the ordinary. These are things we walk past everyday and never notice. He has taken snapshots of these designs in the street not as works of art but more as reminders to himself of how juxtipositions can create design. At one point he talks about how the scaffolding surrounding a building has more design spirit than possible the building itself. He touches on the influence of culture in design and how that can reflect a countries attitudes. How much do we walk by every day and not see?

During the summer I had the opportunity to attend a summer program in a college campus where I had to walk 15 minutes every morning to an SAT class. With my earphones plugged in and the music on, I barely payed any attention to any of my surroundings. It was not until that very first day of the additional photography course I was taking, that I understood that those ordinary objects in my everyday path were hugely significant. There was no morning walk from that day on that I did not try to find beautiful compositions to take photographs of. I began to understand, as well, that those things you don’t really notice make up the most wonderful of pictures- a path of ants carrying a huge crumb of bread through the grass, for example, or the way the stain of a spilled yogurt on the street creates an abstract shot as the brilliant sun illuminates it. I learned that it doesn’t take an extraordinary figure or object to create a masterpiece or to snap a majestic photo. Instead it is those beautiful, tiny details that come together in harmony and equilibrium that at the end produce strong emotions for the spectators.
Not only can the small become great compositions but there is a joie de vivre by noticing the small stuff.
After reading this small piece of writting, I realized that Rob Forbes is a true artist, due to the fact that he sees beyond what´s ordinary. By doing this, I believe that he has the ability of telling a story through his photographs, because as he photographs structures, buildings, and patterns found within a society, he can interpret what´s beautiful to them. Finally, these photographs can demontstrate how everything that sorrounds us is beautiful.
When we talk about art many people will not think about photography, I would've not myself. There is beauty in simplicity as we can see things in a more clear and pure way. Now I can see how photography can really capture this. Everything is naturally beautiful but we sometimes decide not to look at it. Forbes goes to explore this concept and proves this traveling through many cities around the world. Its fascinating how he collects all these details and shapes that are part of a story and traits of a culture. Its not necessary then to shoot a famous piece of architecture to capture this. Instead of taking a picture of a statue he will shoot a hydrant or a floor design making art from where many will not find it. I found interesting for example how he took pictures of vingettes which "accidentaly" formed different simple patterns. So now i guess I will look around and pay more attention to the small basic things around. There will be always be something beautiful and unique we can find in them.
In mi opinion this snapshots are very interesting and the way of looking normal regular all day designs and objects in an artistic way is a very unique and creative idea by Rob Forbes. The snapshots in the picture are sidewalks, trees painted, ect. which we commonly see all the days but really don’t appreciate the artistic view that this certain objects have. This creative view of watching how different culture is and how it reflects the countries identity is interesting also to see the different designs and views of art they have in each country.
Rob Forbes is correct when he says that simplicity is beautiful in public art. He is also correct when he says that these forms of art identifies a society's culture. For example, the new terminal in the Miami International Airport has public art all around. There are designs on the floor, patterns on the walls, even on glass windows. These art forms show a sort of tropical identity in a modern era. Miami is this and so the airport gives an excellent gateway and welcoming to visitors who want an introduction. It is beautiful!
