It is All in the Seeing

The idea that those things around us are the most beautiful can only be fulfilled through a exhaustive search for design in the ways that we live. The ground goes down, the vertical lines stay perpendicular to the bench but the bench has legs of different sizes. Is this bench built correctly? If the bench was built correctly wouldn't you slide right off or is it so that if you have long legs you could sit on the left side of the bench and shorter people would sit on the right. However one looks at it, this image has a beauty that keeps the viewer interested. The value and contrasts allow for the detail to show through. How can any wall have that much to look at yet nothing is there. Photograph by Charles Pawlik

I think this piece of art is amaizing. What I like about it is how the artist made something dull and boring into something beautiful and outstanding. It is a simple piece of art, even though it is simple it is interesting and it catches attention, makes people want to stop and stare at the paiting. The artist emotions that reflect on this painting is loneliness and emptyness since there are no people shown in the artwork and neither a living thing like a plant or an animal. It might also reflect some sadness since it is shaded in black and white.

there are different opinions from me towards this fotograph. if it is a sculpture, than i think it is aming and original. but if it is only a picture of the bench i see it as something dull. if it is a picture it woukd be more interesting if the shades and tones of the back wall would be the same so that the bench could get more attention and it would make a better contrast of something new with a horribly old bench that is even unsittable.

I believe this is a picture. The thing that makes this interesting is the different proportions the bench has from the viewer. The bad painting of the wall makes it amazing, it gives the picture life and makes it more dramatic. The black and white would represent that the photographer is showing us that the place is isolated and abandoned.

The most impressive part of this piece is the fact that it is not a complex thing we are seeing, yet, the texture of the wall in the background, and the fact that everything has a vintage-like look, makes it seem as if it were something severely complex. The fact that it is in black and white givesthe piece a lot more power and it probably gives it a lot more depth than it would if it were in color. This is a piece that should be admired.

I really think this is very interesting. I like, just like danielaV, how the artist used this boaring and useless things into something that grabs the attension.I really think this is good. It may not be the first thing that I would see in a musuem, but if the viewer looks at it carefully, he can find the art in this.

I really like this piece, I think that despite that the subject matter is simple, it keeps the viewer looking throughout the whole piece. I think this is because there is great contrast all throughout, there is a clear distinction between the light and dark parts, in a way that each element in the piece cleary stands out from the rest and does not blend in. I think that this contributes to the effectiveness of the piece because it keeps the viewer engaged. I also like that despite the fact that the bench is placed almost at the center or the photograph it does not seem conventional or boring, in fact it is quite the opposite as this highlights the fact that one of the legs is shorter than the other making the bench seem tilted to one side. In my opinion the piece has great balance, once again, the artit is attracted to every part of the photograph. In my opinion one of the strongest parts of the piece is the implied texture that the viewer can percieve. I think that this texture is visible because of the value and contrast of the piece.

I am almost 90% sure this picture is in Honduras. I tells ALOT about this country the black and white colors with the old bench give you the idea of a sad and poor country that needs help. The detail attracts my attention very much and it gives me a sad feeling because there is no one sitting on the bench.

I like this pictures for various reasons. When I first saw it, though, i could not see much to it but it did grab my attention. It is not the typical kind of beauty that we normally consider or see. It is different, because it gives you alot more to think of, it makes you think and allows you to give it your own interpretation. Not every beauty can be judged by a simple glimpse to its outside, and this is just a perfect example. The color that it is given to it, is dull with an old appearance, making it even more curious. The slanting of the bench is another factor that gives this picture more meaning, the differences that we all have, and individuality. Where we stand. Picures like this, show art to be something more than just a picture or an image, it is a refelection of many points of views in which people give it its own interpretation. It has hidden messages, which is also what gives it art that hidden beauty.

I think that this picture is not so attractive. First of all it has no color, and also by looking at the picture you can realize that it is in an abandoned, poor, and old place, also you can tell that the artist did not have enough creativity. Maybe it would make it more interesting or more attractive if someone was sitting on the bench, or a background on the back. -Adrian S.

The most impressive thing in this piece is that from a simple object that has been fotographed so many complex thoughts can come to one's mind. The piece of art is filled with emotion which is something I can relate to since with my pieces that is one of the most important aspects and something i highly concentrate on. The picture has a good balance and makes our eyes move throught the whole piece. The diference in the textures from he wall, the bench and the floor makes the bench pop out and gives the piece depth. The element of color is also important to the picture since with it being black and white it gives it more meaning and we can get a feel of the person behind the camera.

What draws my attention the most in this piece is the use of contrasts. Contrasts are importsnt, they are a part of human life. Happiness needs sadness, success needs failure, pleasure needs pain. These contrasts create appreciation, and if we lose appreciation we would lose everything. This bench with its simplicity, is actually a complex simplicity. It sounds somewhat paradoxical, but it is hard to convey a powerful message through simplicity. The lines that make up the bench are its essence, as simple as that. We humans are always too busy complicating things, falsely believing we are making them better. This bench, just like a flower, amazes the viewer with its beauty. Just with its beauty, it just is. But humans cannot settle with a ´´just´´. They try to make more out of something than it actually is. This bench makes me stop and think of that simplicity with its infinite beauty that will always remain an enigma. The fact that it is black and wieght enhances that duality that exists in the world that most people miss. What I like the most of this piece is that it represents beauty in a raw and genuine state. If a person tried to convey a melon as a tomato, it would be false. Sometimes things should just be, and this is what this bench is, shaking off the burden of society and letting things be.

I think this amazing photograpgh puts your brain to work a lot because of its visual effects. It is a nice picture which makes you imagine many things like what would have it looked like it the two feet were alike or if the right foot had been taller than the left one how might the picture have been taken if slanted or straight but with another visual effect, or also would the picture be different if it had been taken in color or from another camera angle.

I agree with Adrian that the picture would be more atractive if it was in color, becuase it looks sad and boring. It would be more atractive if the picture had more stuff inside not only a bench. I think it loses attraction to people who want to see good pictures. -Miguel M.

My opinion towards this picture is that i see it very unique and original unlike other ones that ive seen and what makes it singular is the position of the bench and the shades, even though you do not know what the photographer is really trying to transmit through out this, i can picture a catching-attention photograph right there.

I really like this picture because I believe that the photographer wanted something pure and real, this is what we expect to see from a bench. In my opinion who ever that took this picture added no color to give a sad, poor feeling to the picture. I also believe that the photographer did not include someone on the picture so that the viewer could create his own story and add his personal opinion or beliefs when seeing the photograph.

The focus being the bench in a black and white picture makes you wonder just what exactly the artist intended. The black and white contrast provides depth to the picture and sort of emphasizes on the bench. The drastic peeling of paint on the walls in the background offers an outlook of where the place might have been shot, keeping in a firm reality of the picture being in a relatively old area that's been affected by age. It, again, adds depth and perspective to the photo, making your opinions vary with a simple yet picturesque photo.

DanielaV. I agree with you 100% we can see how the artist is trying to show us several emotions in the picture as stated by you before but also many people can agree on the fact that it's dull and simple, it depends on the way you see it.

One of the main reasons i like this work is due to the composition it has, it really keeps me interested in the piece. Also, I think that the use of line is highlited in this photograph because of the horizontal line of the floor and the bench which is tilted, and this gives the piece more interest. Also, I find this picture fascinating, it has no specific meaning to it, the possibilities are endless it forces us to create a meaning for it, this picture pushes our imagination and creativity to the limit, but in all its transparentness there is something that makes me wonder what its meaning is.

I agree with Ana. The image is creative and somehow happens to show us how our lives can be sometimes empty. It didn't catch my attention at first but the tones and values applied in the image well combined with the subject of the image.

In my opinion, the black and white effect adds an extraordinary zoom onto the beach, as if it seems like if it was an optical illusion. Perhaps it can be a public bed? Or some sort of mechanism to work out? Also, the background makes the chair more stylish, it merges into its environment. A really good work.

This picture is very interesting because by seeing at it the wall stands out even thought its in the back. The wall stands out because it has many textures, its smooth but also looks hard, a wierd effect on images. Then the chair is prety interesing because it gets you thinking whether it is built well since its on an inclined plane, but the legs dont seem to be in place.

I think this piece of art is great, it can catch the attention of the viewers instantly, its shading is incredible no colors just black and white that means the authors feelings when doing the artwork. Maybe sadness and lonely because he does not have no one to sit on his bench.

In my opinion, this picture is simple, yet has a lot to say. I agree with danielav, that this artwork may reflect loneliness, emptyness, and I also believe it shows how the bench is abandoned, forgotten and nobody takes care of it, which may be what the artist meant to show. Though not very attractive, this is a very interesting peice of art, where one can find a very strong and emotional meaning. -Rafael Ar.

This photograph is amazing. I think that it being in black and white definetely gives it more depth and makes it more interesting. The peeling of the walls and how the bench is built incorrectly grabs our attention. Pictures like this one are a perfect example on how art transfers soemthing dull into an increible photograph.

I think this a good picture because of the details of the picture. I agree with Daniela V. of what she said about the artist emotions of loneliness and emptyness that he reflects on the drawing. Also i am curious whhy he made the bench that way. Overall i think that this is a really good picture.

When i first saw tis picture, to be honest it caught my attention at all. After Seeing all this comments and contemplating the picture i came to a conclusion, its magnificent. when i first saw it i said to my self this picture is flat, dry, uninspiring, insipid, and unimaginative but observing it,its becoming into something remarkable, out of the ordinary, and singular do to the fact of the great texture it has. The texture of the wall was a great effect on the bench. it makes it pop out. its value makes the picture more dramatic telling us something about the meaning of this pice of art, being solitary , unhappiness, and full of misery. This pice of art should definetly be honored and admired.

This is quite an impressive photograph.
The photo is so simple, yet it can light the spark of controversy, and boasts such high levels of elegance.
There are so many quesions to be answered in a single photograph:
Is it the wall or bench that is tilted? Are both tilted?
Where was the photograph taken?
In my opinion, it depends on the viewer's point of view and their way of thinking. Only through photography can the photographer transform the ordinary object into the extraordinary.

this piece of art is mesmerizing. the black and white gives it a feeling of loneliness and uncared. the artist showed this feeling with a descriptive eye and portrayed them perfectly. i agree with Ricardo Cantero because this piece of art isn't something that would grab your attention at first, but looking at it closely you can find the hidden mysteries it has. This artwork is dull but once it hold your interest it doesn't let it go.

This photography is certainly interesting to any viewer. The way the lighting was used creates an atmosphere the attracts any eye, its what some might call eye-candy. I really like this photo because it shows that you thought about the lighting, the exposure, ISO, and the position. The increased contrast adds to the overall impression of the amount of time you’ve put into finding the right light, the right time of the day to take this picture. What I also enjoy about looking at this piece is how it even looks as if it were symmetrical. The bucket at the bottom left also gives the feeling of isolation, of being alone, like the bench itself. It's overall simplicity like Anya said, makes it seem more complex and elegant in a way that only boosts the aesthetics of the piece.

Something I really like about this photograph is the effect it has on the audience. It makes you see that art is everywhere, not only in the paintings of a gallery, or the murals down the school hallway. This opens your creativity and makes you realize that you can turn anything surrounding you into an art piece, all it takes is to be open-minded and give it a different perspective. At first sight, this picture is not very appealing to the eye, but then as you take a closer look at it, you realize this might have a very deep meaning behind it. You can actually percieve it as you see the picture in detail, even the cooked bench might mean something. I agree with Lorella when she said that the way in which the wall is painted makes the picture more dramatic. I belive that the fact that the bench is empty and lonely, the colors, values and contrast used give this photograpgh a very strong psycological effect on the audience.

In my opinion this photograph is very pretty and also interesting when seen. It is something very simple but the combination of lines, shapes, colors and shades makes the picture seem more complex than it is and leaves us with many questions. The sidewalk lines and the form the bench is made makes us think if that bench could really work or if it is some effect within the picture that makes it look like that. Also, this pictures captures a space were someone would pass it and would never perceive its true beauty and simplicity, something that this picture does capture.

When you see an artwork like this you can really appreciate how mankind as itself has become so dull to the point that we ignore the things that surround us. This artwork makes you want to stop for a second and think, “Hey, wait a second, how is this art?” but when you take a closer look you think, “This is so simple and yet such complexity is found on this…” what does this have that makes you think in such profound thoughts. About what Ana T said, that if this were a picture she would think that it is dull, I would say that dullness is the most interesting part of it, it is the part that I most like because it makes you react even though it is an everyday-object.

I believe this is actually a photograph, a very detailed one I might add. In my opinion, it is a breathtaking and very impressive photograph. It has a high level of contrast and value which I perceive as very beautiful and unique. It also has many details given that it was taken in black and white. Event though it is not something complex like a painting, it does deserve merit and praise because it is simply amazing.

I find really interesting how you can find so much details in something that was not done intended to have such details, I find interesting on how every thing has its complexity and how everything as simple as it is and as boring it is if you look at it carefully you can find many details and transform something dull and boring into somehthing really interesting to analyze and to see.

Well this is very interesting piece of work rather than other pieces of work that have color, they have more objects and people and happy themes this but this one one is just an everyday object a bench. It could be said that this is a very ironical image because it's so beautifull but at the same time it comes from a place that looks to be a slum and is very dirty, but still the shades and tones that sourround the back part of the bech make it look interesting and attracts the eye on sight. I would say that it's simplicity makes it stand out more than other paintings and it gives a sense of tranquility or pice and silence like if the world stopped for a moment

Although we, as human beings, have eyes, we have never TRULY SEEN. For us, things are just things; benches are benches, walls are walls, and lines are lines. Why should we put interest in mind-numbing stuff as those? Yet, there is more to that. The truth is that in life, those repetitive and “irrelevant” things are those who make up our lives. Life is full of beauty, but we just don’t SEE it; we often miss it because we get carried away by other seemingly important stuff. I can certainly say that I completely coincide with Mr. Pawlik – IT IS ALL IN THE SEEING. As I observe this photograph, I come to the conclusion that beauty can be found everywhere, even in this bench. This image has contrast, value, detail, and its legs deceive and trigger our eyes in an exciting way. There is no reason why this image should not be noteworthy; it is mystifying and it holds emotions. At the end of the day, those insignificant objects communicate thousands of feelings, which end up shaping our lives. IT IS DEFINITELY ALL IN THE SEEING.

The originality of this artistic creation is very recognizable, the different types of values used to make it definitely drag peoiple's attention. By the simple fact that everything in it looks old, it transmits a certain feeling of sadness to the public. One can appreciate the various textures the piece contains, it is due it's it's lack of color which produces a feeling of depression. Since this piece is simple, one might think the creation of it was effortless, however, it is truly admirable how someone can convert somethign so basic, to a complex and creative piece.
